Tabatha Johnson and Lisa Lewis honored for organizing cheerleading tournaments.

Harlan County Schools Superintendent Brent Roark recognized cheer tournament organizers Tabatha Johnson, center, and Lisa Lewis prior to the middle school competition on Friday.

Johnson and Lewis have facilitated the competitions for elementary and middle school for the past eight years. The competition serves as a fundraiser for the Harlan County Schools Frank Brittain Academic & Athletic Hall of Fame. The hall of fame honors the district's outstanding students in academics and athletics with scholarships and plaques.

Johnson and Lewis said they enjoy organizing the events each year and do it to gain recognition for our cheerleaders across the districts.

"Cheerleading is a sport. It is a difficult, time consuming sport. We feel these athletes deserve a night in the spotlight, other than from the sidelines during a game. It is evident that every team works extremely hard each year and that deserves recognition," said Johnson.

In addition to the top squad recognitions, a Sportsmanship/Spirit award has been added.

"It brings a new energy to the audience which encourages fan participation," said Lewis.

"The amount of time put in by each cheerleader and their team is tremendous," said Lewis. "The parent commitment makes these teams next level. Without the parents, cheer would be impossible. It is a commitment not only from the cheerleader, but from the parents and other caregivers."
