HCHS Dual Credit Program Harlan County High School and Southeast Kentucky
Community & Technical College have entered into an exciting
partnership which allows Harlan County High School students to
enroll as SKCTC students during their junior year at HCHS.
Many of the classes which are taken at HCHS can also be
counted for college credit at SKCTC.
These classes can subsequently be transferred to any college
or university that accepts credit from SKCTC.
Through this partnership, several HCHS instructors have
become accredited college instructors and are allowed to award
college credit for their classes.
There are currently 14 dual credit classes
being taught at HCHS with plans to include two additional classes in
2010/11. One of
the most incredible aspects of the dual credit program is that
nine of the classes currently offered are
tuition free;
the other five classes are offered at ½ of
the normal SKCTC tuition rate due
to the fact that the instructors for these five courses are already
paid by the Harlan County School System.
Instructors for several of the courses are regular full-time
SKCTC instructors. The advantages associated with the dual credit
program include:
·
A smooth
transition from high school to college –students who enroll in
college during high school will likely come to understand that the
dream of attending college really can become a reality.
·
Increased student
attendance – students will feel more compelled to attend school
regularly if they know they are getting college credit.
·
Enormous cost
savings to parents!
Free and ½ price college credit!!
·
The requirements for the college courses add
rigor to the dual credit classes and challenge students.
