Now you have the opportunity to call and receive cancellation information from Harlan County High School. Two numbers are available to access up-to-date information about the School, Clubs, Activities, Sporting Events and more at HCHS. To access general closing/cancellation information on Clubs, School, Activities, and Meetings call (606) 574-2099. For Athletic Events and Practice cancellation call (606) 574-2098.

Announcements, Upcoming and Current Events:
- Students who are sixteen (16) or seventeen (17) years old and become academically deficient or deficient in attendance shall be reported to the Transportation Cabinet for driver’s license, permit or driving privilege revocation. - The Harlan County Walking Club walks on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 10:00-11:30 on the indoor track at Harlan County High School. Free and open to the public. All ages are welcome. Walk, jog, or run at your own pace. Walking Club is open all year round, except for snow days and holidays. Enter at the top gym entrance (4 brick columns facing U.S. 119). Congratulations to Harlan County High School Student Athletes Kassydee Owens, Baili Boggs and Hunter Crain on being recognized by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association in the "Triple Threat Award" program.
Kathy Minor chosen to lead HCHS as Principal
Mrs. Helton and Mrs. Cottrell's second grade classes answered the essential question, "What are some things families like to do together?" They read about different families and the students created their own family trees.
Harlan County High School Project Lead The Way pre-engineering program recently studied the six simple machines -- lever, wheel and axle, pulleys, inclined plane, wedge, and screw -- and gears and sprockets.
Cumberland Elementary's 21st Century After School Program has begun for the 2019-2020 school year. Students receive a meal, homework help, and the opportunity to participate in various enrichment activities. The program runs from 2:40-5:05 Monday-Thursday and transportation home is provided.
HARLAN COUNTY PEE WEE FLAG FOOTBALL 2019 SCHEDULE
The Harlan County High School Marching Band attended the North Laurel High School Marching Invitational this past Saturday, September 14th in London. The band finished first place in class AA and also received best percussion in class AA.

Black Mountain 6th grade students playing “Battleship” to practice using the periodic table of elements.
Black Mountain seventh grade students practice collecting data in order to support a claim by measuring the bubble size produced by different soap brands.
JROTC Raider Meet
8th grade students at Black Mountain designed and constructed roller coasters to test the relationship between kinetic & potential energy to speed & position.
Congratulations to Harlan County Public School teachers Amy Cottrell and Rachel Yost on obtaining their National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certification. Last fall, Cottrell, a primary teacher at Wallins Elementary, and Yost, a primary teacher at Rosspoint, completed a three-year program to achieve a Teacher Leader master’s degree from Morehead State University.
Several Wallins primary teachers recently hosted one (of four throughout the year) Reading/Math night for parents and students K-3.

Morgan Blakley, a senior at Harlan County High School, is the Monticello Banking Company’s Student Citizen Award Recipient for September.
Cawood Elementary had their first “Girls Nite” for our Middle School students on September 26th from 6:00 until 7:30. They were treated to manicures and snacks. There were 25 girls in attendance. It was a night full of fun.

Schools across the district and Commonwealth are seeing stars as results of the Kentucky Department of Education’s new accountability system have been released.

Students from the Harlan County FFA attended the Regional Fall Field Day at Eastern Kentucky University Department of Agricultural Science in Richmond on October 16th.
The long hours of practice during the hot days of summer and the windy rainy days of fall are paying off for the Harlan County High School Band.
The Cawood Lady Comets completed a perfect 19-0 season by winning the 2019 Harlan Co. 4th / 5th & 6th grade championship at Harlan Co. High School last night.
The Kentucky Farm Bureau District 11 Youth & Variety Contest was October 22, 2019. Breanna Rhymer, a Junior at HCHS, sang beautifully in the Variety Contest, and Kiki Dean, a Junior at HCHS, gave an excellent speech. Caleb Ashley, Senior at HCHS, won the male speech and interview contest. Caleb gave an excellent speech on the importance of Honeybees to Agriculture. Harlan County Farm Bureau is very proud of all our contestants.
Red Ribbon Week - Students wore red to show their support of being drug free. They signed a big red ribbon stating that they commit to being drug free and living a healthy lifestyle. Cawood Elementary principal Ms. Sergent and FRYSC Coordinator Melissa Owens, presented the sign to Matt Cope, of the Harlan County Sheriff’s Department, on behalf of our students at Cawood Elementary School.

SKCTC COVID-19 Contacts & Updates
As a result of the continued uncertainty around the COVID 19, The 2020 Harlan County Community Scholarship Banquet has been cancelled. However, scholarships will still be awarded to selected seniors from the class of 2020. Additionally, the scholarship application deadline has been extended to Thursday, April 30th, 2020. Scholarship applications must be submitted to School Guidance counselors on or before Thursday, April 30th, 2020.
