Recent News & Events

The Harlan County Public School District is excited about all of the opportunities available to our students, employees and community as a whole. We hope that you will join us as we celebrate the successes of our Schools, Programs, and District and ask that you become involved in the education of our children. Below and on our News page you will find a number of publications that will reflect the hard work and dedication of everyone involved.

- In order to promote more social interaction among our middle school girls outside of the classroom, Cawood Elementary has started a “Girls’ Nite” once a month.  
- The Harlan County Black Bear Football Team and senior member Austin Caudill were honored for their display of patriotism prior to the start of the Bell County game on Friday.
- Harlan County High School Senior Kylie Royce loves to tell stories. She tells them so well, in fact, that she was named a state 2018 Kentucky Youth Storytelling Torchbearers.
- Students in Rene Mattern's class at Black Mountain Elementary School worked with the Texas Instrument calculators to program computerized rovers during enrichment class.
- AG Commissioner visits HCHS; honors Junior Chef Team
- Melony Denham, regional coordinator for America's Entrepreneurial Schools, and Sherri Clark, representing Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College, presented Evarts Elementary School the America’s Entrepreneurial School banner.
- Congratulations to Rosspoint on winning top honors in the middle grades quick recall challenge for 2018 in the Harlan County Academic League. Evarts was second following a tie breaker battle with Wallins, which finished third.
- Congratulations to Cawood Elementary School Principal Melinda Sergent and her staff for receiving the Custodial Cleanliness Award for the first inspection period of the 2018-19 school year.
- Mrs. Creech’s first grade at Cumberland Elementary recently visited Kingdom Come State Park.

We accept the responsibility of providing a quality education to ensure that each student regardless of gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic or physically challenged status, has the opportunity to develop their abilities to the highest level.

We embrace the goals set forth in the Kentucky Education Reform Act: expecting high achievement from all students; commitment from the community, parents, faculty, staff and administrators placing emphasis on the relating education of real life experiences resulting in smooth transition into adulthood; and providing a risk free, caring, safe environment.
