What is C.A.T.S. and Why is it Important?

C.A.T.S. stand for the Commonwealth Accountability Testing System which is the standards-based test given to all Kentucky school children. It is given for the purpose of determining to what extent our students are learning the Core Content-the essential components of Instruction determined by the Kentucky Education Reform Act of 1990. Specific content areas are assessed at various grade levels throughout the child's school career. The results of this test are used to measure the overall performance of a school based upon the goal of continuous and steady improvement from year to year by ALL students in All areas.

  10 11 12

In the 9th grade, the CTBS (Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills) is given. This is a standardized test on Reading, Math, and Language. The results of these scores are converted and integrated into our total Academic Index to determine our Accountability Index.

Therefore, every student has a responsibility for performing to the very best of their ability!!!

As a student, how can I prepare?

To start with and as they become available, visit the links found above to take actual on-line practice tests over the released items from last year which are representative of assessment items on the Kentucky Core Content Test (KCCT) that you see each spring. Each content area and grade level has a set of multiple choice questions and open response items. Most sub-domain areas of a content area will have items that assess the sub-domain but not all.

The links below provide the released items as well which can be printed and viewed as a hard copy for all three grade levels.  They are rather large and may take some time to download, so be patient.

What can parents do to help?

Encourage our child to take this test seriously and do his/her best work.
Encourage your child to attend school every day during test week.
Encourage your child to get a good night's rest each night before a test.
Encourage your child to eat something each morning before they come to school.
Schedule all doctor and dentist appointments after school or at a time that will not conflict with testing.
Encourage your child to keep up with the work in all of his/her classes.
And when is this test given?

The testing window for the C.A.T.S. test is April 18th - May 28th. We will utilize the entire window for the 2005 test.
